What is J.O.Y. ???

J.O.Y. is about emotion… and as most of us know knitting can be quite an emotional activity.

J.O.Y. is about a business called JOY OF YARN …

Knitters are a special type of person, something that is not fully understood until you pick up the needles for the first time. It is then that you discover an entry point into a world of colour, excitement, and passion enabled only by needles, yarn and your imagination.

James had been knitting for over thirty years before he felt the urge to open a yarn store of his own, in 2008, and he hasn’t looked back since. It was an easy decision to become a niche retailer specialising in hand knit yarns to enable his own yarn habit and to tempt others. In 2010 James felt another urge, this time it was to start hand dyeing yarn and so the Fibre Alive label was born with Merino Mania being the first yarn released. Other additions to the range include Delicious DK and Lace Lovers. J.O.Y. aims to entice you into the world of knitting by supplying quality yarns at competitive prices, providing great service and developing long lasting friendships along the way.

J.O.Y. is about family …

James is lucky that both his Mother and father are accomplished knitters in their own right and chose to teach their children to knit at an early age. They, along with Ian, have always been his greatest supporters in James’ various forays into the world of fibre. Now more than thirty years after first casting on James was able to acknowledge the role his parents had in developing his love of knitting by opening this business in 2008 on his Father’s birthday and naming the business J.O.Y. after his Mother. Sadly, James’ father passed away in 2009 but his memory lives on with Doug’s Comfy Chair for Charity. Click here to find out more.

J.O.Y. is about being part of the knitting community …

Knitting is a great way of bringing people together and that is why we set up a couple of knitting groups which meet at Scarlet Oak Cottage and are open to knitters of all ages and skill levels.

The Friday Night Sock Club meets from 7.30pm on the third Friday of each month.

The Sunday Knit-Tea group meets from 1pm – 5pm on the first Sunday of each month.

It’s a wonderful experience to be able to spend some time with others who have a shared passion for yarn, so come along and join us for some fibrous fun. Click here to find out when the next meetings will be held.

For those of you who are not able to visit us in person you can continue to visit us here on our website or look us up on Ravelry where James goes by the name of KiwiJames and you can find Joy of Yarn in the groups section.

J.O.Y. is about putting a smile on children’s faces …

We also like to give back to the local community and we are doing this by supporting the Greytown Toy Library who are a local group with the aim of putting smiles on the faces of children… and their parents. Click here to find out more.
